Sun. Shorts. Skin. What’s not to love about the summer? Since we only get 2-3 months of it in Sweden I’m going to make the most out of it and I highly recommend you to join me. I’m obviously talking about how to stay active, burn calories and have a lot of fun while getting a good looking tan.
Therefore I’ve collected 26 awesome outdoor summer activities that I love and I’m sure you’ll as well. Get in great shape while having fun. What more can you ask for? Feel free to share your favorite activities in the comment section below and remember to take care.
Swimming – I love water and the freedom it gave me as a kid. Like walruses. Awkward on land but awesome in water. Swim long distances on your own, hang out with your friends or use the diving tower to burn even more calories by running up the stairs. If you can’t swim, take a class and learn. It’s truly awesome.
Biking – Not one of my favorite outdoor actives but a great way to cover long distances in a short amount of time while getting fit as a bonus. Take your bike to the store, work or wherever you’re going. It’s cheap, environmental friendly and wonderful on sunny days.
Paintball – I’ve only done it a few times but it’s a lot of fun. Invite your friends and play a few rounds of capture the flag. You’ll burn a lot of calories without even noticing it. And, truth to be told, who doesn’t enjoy playing war?
Golf – Your age doesn’t matter, you can still compete in golf thanks to handicap. Last summer I (22 years), my sister (16) and grandfather (79) played several times against each other. You’re out in the sun, walking several kilometers in a lush landscape. Highly recommended.
Basketball – You don’t need to compete with anyone. I’m short (178 cm) and prefer contact sport so I’ve never been a fan of basketball. I do, however, enjoy going out in the sun and taking some shots by myself or with a few friends.
Frisbee – Works as a great complement to tanning and bathing when you’re at the beach with a friend or two. Also works the day after a party if you want to get together with a few friends and talk about what happened last night.
Volleyball – Probably the best group activity at the beach. Gather a few friends or strangers and get to know each other. When the game is over you can ask your new friends to tag along to the water or a party later that day. Volleyball also works perfectly in water.
Jogging – Invest in a mp3-player, GPS and heart rate monitor to entertain yourself while pushing yourself to the limits. Look around and try to find a running trail in the nature instead of running in the big city. You can even stop halfway trough and do a workout before you jog home.
Gardening – Be productive while burning calories by fixing your gardening. Plant some new berries and get yourself a tasty homemade breakfast. Take off your shoes and go around barefoot in the grass while working. Create a birdbath and you’ll have company for the rest of the summer. Lawn mowing is a great way to be productive while getting in shape.
Walking – I prefer to take a 30 minute walk in the morning because you get your body going and the rest of the day goes along much easier. I also enjoy walking in the evenings though and a slow walk at the beach or harbor can be amazing. Either listen to a audio book, talk to a friend or listen to the nature.
Hike – Find a nearby place with a great view and hike to the top. Just remember that the chase is better than the catch and I’m sure you’ll enjoy yourself by talking with your friends while going for the top. You can even consider taking a tent with you and camp along the way.
Rollerblades – A fun alternative to biking, walking and jogging.
Baseball – Yet another fun team sport. Get together with a few friends, have a beer, barbecue and play some baseball. Just make sure you don’t get drunk and injure yourself.
Water fight – We’re all kids inside. The difference is that when you grow older you can buy more expensive toys. Invest i some water balloons, water guns and have fun soaking your opponents. There’s even tournament-style games which you can read more about on Wikipedia.
Rock climbing – Look at kids and you’ll notice that they’re climbing on everything. Trees, houses, etc. As we grow older and taller it’s not as fun anymore. However, you can change this by beginning with rock climbing. I promise you’ll feel like a kid again.
Badminton – Can be a bit difficult outdoors if it’s windy.
Table tennis – Yet another favorite of mine. It doesn’t take much space and the ball will never end up at your neighbors. My father was a great player in his youth but I didn’t play much until a vacation in France, several years ago, where we had an outdoor table. We played every day during a week and when we came home we decided to buy our own table.
Tennis – The grown up version? I wouldn’t go so far since it’s two different kinds of sport but this is also a lot of fun. Gather some friends and play 1 on 1, 2 on 2 or create a tournament to get a winner.
Parkour – I’ve never tried it but it looks great if you know what you’re doing. Watch this video if you haven’t heard about it before and do some searches if you want to find a beginners guide.
Football – My favorite sport, all categories. Here you have a lot of options. You can do tricks, take free kicks and penalties by yourself or invite a friend to be goalkeeper. If you’re a few friends you can play a game, take corners or just stand in a circle and do tricks. You can also play football tennis which is a lot of fun.
Surfing – Truth to be told, I’ve never tried it but seriously, who wouldn’t like to? It’s on my bucket list and once in my life I’ll travel abroad, take a beginners class and surf.
Wash your car – Once again you can be productive while burning calories.
Canoeing – You can either use it to go from point A to B or just spend a day going around a lake. You’re out in nature while getting a good looking tan and being able to talk with your friend. Highly recommended.
Weight lifting – Find a nearby playground and do some body workout. You can do pushups, chin-ups, situps, dips, pull-ups, etc. You can even run in stairs and jog home once you’re done.
Sex – Yeah, you knew it was coming.
Invite your friends and make an adventure out of it. A few years ago, I and a few friends got together and had a great vacation. We started out by going with draisines, changed to bicycles and then traveled the last few kilometers with canoes. There we lived for a week in a comfortable cabin and spent our days swimming, drinking beer and barbecuing on a motorized raft while going up and down the river.
We burned a ton of calories, shared some amazing memories and came home with a great looking tan. Those are the days I’ll cherish.
